In Italian, is the pronoun's gender defined by the person its referring to or the subject?

For example. Is the phrase " la mia email e......" always going to by mia, since email is feminine. Or would it be mio email if a man was the one speaking. I'm pretty sure its the first, but I just want to clarify.
