Why Arianes are being launched from Korou, South Amertica instead of some part in Europe?

My guess is that Europe is located too far north of the ecliptic, and it would require a lot of extra fuel to make a plane adjustment while in orbit. It might also need to launch near the equator if it's sending up a geostationary satellite.
