I accidentaly deleted an email from my inbox. it is not in the trash box which i have not deleted. there areiw?

not all of my deeted emails go to the trash box so where do they go and can i retrieve them? the item i am concerned about is not in the trash box but i have not emptied it in a while so where did it go?!
