Can i hand in my notice when i am on maternity leave?

hi i started my maternity leave today but do not wish to return to the same work place when my baby is born as i have had alot of problems with them. I am not entitiled to smp but am recieving maternity allowance from the government will i still be eligible for this if i hand my notice in to my employers now? thanks for your help in advance xx
